How to prepare for IVF

How to prepare for IVF

Fertility expert Dr Victoria Walker reveals what every parent-to-be should know

Dr Victoria Walker from Institut Marques talks at length about what to expect when embarking on IVF
For all the information about IVF available, it remains a physically, emotionally and financially demanding process that may also tap into a couple's vulnerabilities.

This means it's incredibly important to be prepared, in both mind and body.

Yet with so much at stake, it can be easy to bundle misinformation and fact together when trying to research your next steps.

With this in mind, Dr Victoria Walker, a specialist in assisted reproduction at Institute Marques, has spoken to Mirror Online to help separate fact from fiction and explain what every woman (and man) needs to prepare for.

The average success rate of IVF

  • It's an answer many people want to know before investing in IVF.
But while Victoria does say there's a 72.1 per cent chance of pregnancy per cycle (that's to say, a positive pregnancy test result, rather than a live birth), success rates decrease after 35.
  • There's an 81.8 per cent of positive pregnancy test results for women with IVF under 35.
Between the ages of 35 and 37 years, this goes down to 67 per cent.
  • Between 38 to 40, there's a further decrease to 60 per cent, and after forty, most women are looking at a 50 per cent chance of a positive pregnancy test.

To help those undertaking this often demanding journey, Dr Walker talks in her video about the physical and mental preparation for IVF and the other important factors to prepare for.
