IVF Costs In Ireland

One in five Irish couples experience difficulty conceiving, and this figure is on the increase. About 2% of children in the Western World are born through IVF, which is expected to rise to 5-10%.

For age-related infertility, there are various treatments available from ovulation stimulating drugs to intrauterine insemination (IUI), In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) to egg, sperm or embryo donation.

The Average Cost of a Round of IVF is €5000 Rising to €10,000 with Donor Eggs.

The Average Number of Treatments per Couple is Four,

that's €20,000 - €40,000 per Couple

Private Health Insurance Does NOT Cover Most Fertility Treatments.

Each fertility clinic will tell you their own success rates; however, the average success rates for IVF are on the low side as follows:

  • 30% for women under 35
  • 24% for women aged 35 to 37
  • 18% for women aged 38 to 39
  • 10% for women aged 40 to 42
  • 3% for women aged 43 to 44
  • 1% for women aged over 44

The true cost of infertility cannot, however, simply be measured in purely financial terms. There is the additional stress, emotional, physical and social toll to pay. The emotional rollercoaster can include dealing with stress, blame and trying to cope with the intense, deeply primitive 'survival of the species' drive to have a baby.

Women may also feel judged for leaving it too late or when told their egg supply is not good enough or too old. The physical toll can include invasive, often painful medical investigative procedures and treatment. At a social level, couples may also have to contend with the feelings of isolation, loneliness, shame, and pressure to reproduce.

The good news is that there is an increasing awareness of the non-financial costs of infertility and thankfully programs and support groups to help couples with the emotional costs are on the increase.
